How Does the Prorated Salary Calculator Work?

The prorated salary calculator calculates your partial year compensation based on your annual salary and the period you worked. It's useful for employees who start or leave mid-year, contract workers, or anyone who needs to calculate partial year pay.

Formula:

Daily Rate = Annual Salary ÷ Days in Year

Prorated Salary = Daily Rate × Days Worked

Note: The calculator uses 365 days per year (or 366 for leap years).

Example:

If your annual salary is $60,000 and you worked from January 1 to June 30 (181 days in a non-leap year), your prorated salary would be:

  • Daily Rate: $60,000 ÷ 365 = $164.38
  • Days Worked: 181 days
  • Prorated Salary: $164.38 × 181 = $29,753.42
  • Percentage of Year: 181 ÷ 365 = 49.59%

Frequently Asked Questions

When should I use a prorated salary calculator?

Use this calculator when you start or leave a job mid-year, work on a contract basis, or need to calculate partial year compensation. It's also useful for employers calculating severance pay or final paychecks.

How are leap years handled?

The calculator automatically detects leap years and uses 366 days instead of 365 when calculating the daily rate. If your employment period spans a leap year, the calculation accounts for the correct number of days.

Does this include taxes?

No, this calculator shows gross (pre-tax) prorated salary. For after-tax amounts, you'll need to apply your tax rate separately using a tax calculator.

What if I don't know my end date?

If you leave the end date empty, the calculator will use today's date as your end date. This is useful for calculating your current prorated salary if you're still employed.

Can I use this for hourly employees?

This calculator is designed for salaried employees. For hourly workers, multiply your hourly rate by the hours worked during the period.
