I reached FIRE but feeling insecured

I am currently 38 years old. I have reached my FIRE goal based on 2-3% withdrawal off my liquid investments, however I am feeling a little insecure and not sure if I should FIRE now. This has always been my goal. My spouse is still working and I have a 4 year old kid. I am currently looking to quit my job as I hated the toxic environment. What do you suggest?

Hey there!

First off, congratulations on reaching your FIRE (Financial Independence, Retire Early) goal! That's a huge achievement and you should be really proud of yourself. But I understand your apprehension, especially with a little one in the picture. I think the key here is to balance your financial goals and your happiness, so let's break it down:

  1. Double-Check Your Numbers: It sounds like you've got your math down, but it never hurts to reassess. Consider using our Savings Goals Tracker at BearSavings to double-check your figures and make sure you're comfortable with your withdrawal rate.

  2. Consider Part-Time or Freelance Work: If leaving your job is mainly due to the toxic environment, but you're still interested in working, you might want to consider part-time or freelance work. This can provide some additional income, keep you stimulated and also offer a cushion to your savings.

  3. Talk It Out With Your Spouse: Your partner's thoughts and feelings are crucial here. Have a heart-to-heart about what FIRE means for your family, including lifestyle changes and financial adjustments.

  4. Plan For Unexpected Expenses: With a kid in the picture, unexpected expenses can crop up. Make sure you've got a buffer for such situations. You can use our Daily Challenges tool on BearSavings to help build up this emergency fund.

  5. Consider Your Mental Health: A toxic work environment can seriously damage your mental health. If quitting your job will alleviate stress and improve your quality of life, that's a significant factor to weigh in.

Remember, FIRE is not an all-or-nothing game. You can adjust your plan as you move along. It's more like making a delicious soup rather than baking a cake - you can always tweak the recipe!

You're doing a great job, and it's totally okay to feel unsure. But remember, the goal of financial independence is to enjoy life on your own terms. So, take a deep breath, trust yourself, and remember — you've got this!
