You are not wondering how to survive until the next paycheque. You may have enough money to take a long break—or possibly never return to a conventional job at all.

But that does not make the decision easy.

In some ways, having money makes the question harder. Should you protect everything you have built by finding another well-paid job? Should you declare yourself retired? Or should you wait, work on passion projects and see whether you can create a life that is less dependent on an employer?

That is the position I find myself in now. I am in my late 30s, approaching 40, with a seven-figure investment portfolio. After being laid off, I started working on projects I genuinely care about and thinking more seriously about earning on my own terms.

My conclusion is not that everyone with seven figures should retire. It is that a strong portfolio gives you something more useful than a retirement label: the power to stop making decisions from fear.

<div style="max-width: class="wp-element-caption">A seven-figure portfolio can provide the freedom to rethink work, retirement and building income on your own terms.

The short answer: do not rush into either retirement or another job

If you are laid off in your late 30s with a seven-figure portfolio, the best option may be a deliberate period of semi-retirement rather than an immediate return to full-time employment or a permanent retirement announcement.

Use the first 6 to 12 months to understand your real spending, protect your portfolio, test new income sources and decide what kind of work you still want in your life. Keep the door to employment open, but do not assume that rebuilding the same corporate life is automatically the safest choice.

In your late 30s, you may need to fund 50 years or more of future expenses. A seven-figure portfolio can create enormous flexibility, but whether it can support full retirement depends on the size of the portfolio, your annual spending, taxes, healthcare costs, family commitments and investment risk.

The number alone is not the answer. The relationship between your assets and your spending is.

A seven-figure portfolio does not automatically mean financial independence

“Seven figures” sounds like a finish line, but it covers a very wide range. A $1 million portfolio and a $9 million portfolio are both seven figures, yet they support completely different lives. Currency matters too. So does where you live.

The more useful number is your withdrawal rate:

Annual portfolio withdrawals ÷ investable portfolio value × 100

If you spend $50,000 a year and have $1 million invested, your starting withdrawal rate is 5%. If the same spending is supported by a $2 million portfolio, the rate is 2.5%.

Here is how different portfolio sizes translate into annual withdrawals before tax:

Investable portfolio

3% withdrawal

3.5% withdrawal

3.9% withdrawal

$1,000,000

$30,000

$35,000

$39,000

$1,500,000

$45,000

$52,500

$58,500

$2,000,000

$60,000

$70,000

$78,000

$3,000,000

$90,000

$105,000

$117,000

Morningstar’s latest retirement-income research estimates a 3.9% starting withdrawal rate for a 30-year retirement with fixed, inflation-adjusted spending under its base-case assumptions. That is a planning reference, not a guarantee—and someone retiring around age 38 or 39 may face a much longer horizon than 30 years.

This is why I would not look at a seven-figure account balance, multiply it by 4% and immediately conclude that I am set for life. Early retirement magnifies longevity risk, inflation risk and the consequences of poor returns during the first few years.

It also matters what is inside the portfolio. One million dollars spread across diversified assets is different from one million dollars concentrated in a few volatile growth stocks. An investment can have a market value today without being reliable retirement capital at that same value tomorrow.

The biggest danger is sequence-of-returns risk

When you are employed and markets fall, new salary contributions let you buy more assets at lower prices. Once you depend on the portfolio, the mechanics reverse. You may need to sell investments while prices are down simply to pay normal expenses.

A severe decline early in retirement can do disproportionate damage because money withdrawn during the downturn is no longer invested when the market recovers. This is known as sequence-of-returns risk.

FINRA advises people approaching retirement to reassess investment risk because they may have less time to recover from market losses. The point is even more important for an early retiree drawing from a concentrated or aggressive portfolio.

This does not mean selling every growth investment and hiding in cash. Cash carries its own risk because inflation erodes purchasing power over time, as Investor.gov explains.

The goal is to avoid becoming a forced seller. For me, that means separating money needed for the next few years from capital intended to compound for decades. Depending on family obligations and portfolio volatility, an early retiree might hold 12 to 24 months of essential expenses in cash or cash equivalents, with additional lower-volatility assets beyond that. The right buffer is personal, but relying on next month’s stock price is not a retirement plan.

Going back to work is not necessarily the safest choice

The conventional response to a layoff is straightforward: update the résumé, contact recruiters and find the closest replacement for the previous job.

There is nothing wrong with that. A strong salary can reduce portfolio withdrawals, provide benefits and allow investments to continue compounding. If the right role offers interesting problems, good people and reasonable control over your time, returning to employment can be a rational choice even when you do not strictly need the money.

But I no longer see another corporate job as permanent security.

If I return to a similar role now, I could earn well for several more years and still be laid off again in my 40s. At that point, I may be more expensive than younger candidates, more specialised, and less willing to accept an entry-level reset. In the United States, federal age-discrimination protection begins at age 40, which is a reminder that age-related employment risk is recognised in law—even if the law cannot guarantee anyone a job.

An employer can be an excellent source of income. It should not be mistaken for a source of certainty.

That changes the decision. The question is no longer simply, “Which job can replace my old salary?” It becomes, “What kind of work will leave me more resilient five years from now?”

Full retirement may be too permanent a label

Retirement sounds attractive immediately after a layoff because it converts an event that happened to you into a choice you made. Instead of saying “I lost my job,” you get to say “I retired early.”

But labels can push us into decisions before we are ready.

I do not want to spend the next several decades doing nothing. I still want to build, learn, invest, write and create useful things. What I want to retire from is not work itself. It is work organised entirely around someone else’s priorities, calendar and tolerance for layoffs.

That distinction matters. Financial independence and retirement are not the same thing. Financial independence means work can become optional. It does not require ambition, curiosity or income to disappear.

Calling this period a career break, mini-retirement or self-funded runway may be more honest. It gives you permission to explore without forcing you to defend a permanent decision.

The third option: build a portfolio-funded runway

I believe the most attractive path for many people in this situation sits between full-time employment and full retirement.

The portfolio provides a runway. During that runway, you build small, independent sources of income around your skills and interests. That could include consulting, digital products, content sites, a niche service business, software, teaching or part-time work.

The aim is not necessarily to replace a former salary immediately. Replacing even part of your annual spending can dramatically reduce pressure on the portfolio.

Suppose your household spends $80,000 a year. If independent projects eventually produce $30,000 after tax, the portfolio only needs to supply $50,000. On a $2 million portfolio, that reduces the withdrawal rate from 4% to 2.5%.

That small income stream may be worth more than its face value. It reduces the number of shares you need to sell during a downturn, gives your investments more time to compound and keeps your skills current. It can also restore confidence after a layoff because you are proving that your ability to earn did not belong to your former employer.

Some people describe versions of this as Barista FIRE or semi-retirement. The label matters less than the structure: investment capital covers part of life, flexible work covers another part, and neither a single employer nor a single asset has to carry the entire burden.

Being your own boss is not risk-free—but the risks are different

I like the idea of becoming my own boss because it reduces the risk that one manager, reorganisation or budget decision can suddenly remove all of my earned income.

However, self-employment does not eliminate risk. It exchanges employer risk for customer risk, platform risk, execution risk and irregular income. An affiliate site can lose search traffic. A consulting client can cancel. A software product can fail to find a market.

The answer is not to romanticise entrepreneurship. It is to diversify earned income in the same way we diversify investments.

One large employer pays well but creates a single point of failure. Five smaller income sources may pay less at first, but no single decision can reduce the total to zero. Over time, the most promising project can receive more attention while weaker ideas are closed without threatening the household.

For me, future-proofing does not mean guessing which job will survive artificial intelligence, automation or the next restructuring cycle. It means owning more of the things that produce my income: my audience, my products, my expertise, my processes and my capital.

A practical 12-month plan after the layoff

The first months after a layoff are a poor time to make irreversible decisions. There may be anger, relief, embarrassment and urgency all at once. A structured experiment is more useful than declaring either “I must find a job immediately” or “I will never work again.”

During the first month, I would focus on stabilising. Work out severance, insurance, taxes, benefits and the household’s essential monthly spending. Avoid making major portfolio changes purely because employment income has stopped.

Over the next two months, calculate three spending levels: essential, comfortable and aspirational. Then test the portfolio against each one. Include irregular costs such as home repairs, family support, travel, medical bills and replacing a car. These expenses are easy to forget when retirement projections are built from one unusually cheap month.

For the rest of the year, choose one or two passion projects with a credible path to revenue. Set business milestones, not just activity goals. “Publish every week” is an activity. “Reach $1,000 in recurring monthly revenue” or “sign three paying clients” is a result.

At the end of 12 months, review the evidence:

Has the portfolio withdrawal rate remained comfortable?

Did actual spending match the plan?

Is at least one project gaining users, revenue or strategic value?

Do you enjoy the daily reality of independent work?

Are your skills and professional relationships still current?

Would a good job now feel like an opportunity rather than a rescue?

This creates a genuine choice. If a project is working, continue. If you miss the structure and collaboration of employment, return selectively. If markets fall or spending rises, add consulting or part-time income. Waiting is not indecision when the waiting period produces information.

Five numbers I would know before choosing early retirement

Before treating a layoff as the start of permanent retirement, I would want five numbers written down.

The first is annual essential spending, not an estimate based on salary or a generic percentage of pre-retirement income. The second is the all-in annual lifestyle cost, including taxes and irregular expenses. The third is the current withdrawal rate using liquid, investable assets—not home equity that cannot easily pay bills.

The fourth is the income floor I could realistically generate from flexible work. The fifth is the downside withdrawal rate after a major portfolio decline. If a $2 million portfolio falls 35% to $1.3 million, an $80,000 annual withdrawal rises from 4% to about 6.2%. That stress test tells me more than the current account balance.

I would also separate net worth from retirement assets. A valuable home, private-company stake or locked retirement account may make someone a millionaire without giving them enough accessible cash flow for the next decade.

So, should you work, retire or wait?

Go back to full-time work if your expected spending requires an uncomfortable withdrawal rate, your portfolio is highly concentrated, your family needs benefits, or you have found a role you genuinely want. Financial independence should allow you to choose a better job; it does not require you to reject employment.

Retire fully if your spending is comfortably supported under conservative assumptions, your family agrees with the plan, and you have a clear idea of what you are retiring to—not just what you are escaping from.

Wait and build on your own terms if the numbers give you runway but you are not ready for a permanent decision. This is the option I find most compelling. It preserves career optionality while giving independent projects enough time to become real businesses rather than rushed side hustles.

The most important point is that waiting should have a purpose and a review date. Otherwise, a career break can quietly become a period of portfolio withdrawals without direction.

Frequently asked questions

Is $1 million enough to retire in your late 30s?

It can be enough for a low-cost lifestyle, but it is not automatically enough. At a 3% starting withdrawal rate, a $1 million portfolio provides $30,000 a year before taxes. Retiring in your late 30s also creates a potentially 50-year or longer funding period, so spending flexibility and future income matter greatly.

Should I find another job immediately after being laid off?

Not necessarily, if you have sufficient cash and investments. Give yourself time to recover and evaluate your finances, but maintain professional relationships and employable skills. The goal is to avoid accepting the wrong job from panic while keeping good opportunities available.

How much cash should I keep after a layoff?

There is no universal number. Someone relying on a volatile portfolio may prefer at least 12 to 24 months of essential expenses in cash or cash equivalents, while a person with reliable household income may need less. Holding too much cash for decades can also lose purchasing power to inflation.

Is self-employment safer than a corporate job?

It is safer in some ways and riskier in others. You reduce dependence on one employer but take on uncertain revenue and execution risk. Self-employment becomes more resilient when income comes from several clients, products or channels rather than one large customer or platform.

What is the best option if I am financially independent but still want to work?

Consider semi-retirement, consulting, part-time work or building a small business. Financial independence can be used to redesign work instead of ending it.

Final thoughts

Being laid off in your late 30s can feel like a warning about the next stage of your career. For me, it has also been an invitation to think differently.

I could pursue another job and may still choose one if the role is right. But I no longer want my entire financial future to depend on remaining valuable to one employer through my 40s and beyond. The layoff made that concentration risk impossible to ignore.

My seven-figure portfolio does not tell me that I never need to work again. It tells me that I have time to build a different relationship with work—one based more on ownership, interest and choice.

So I am not rushing to call myself retired. I am working on passion projects, testing ways to earn independently and trying to make work fit my life rather than letting work define it.

That may produce less income in the short term. It may also create something more durable: a portfolio of assets, skills and businesses that I control.

The best use of financial independence may not be retiring as early as possible. It may be reaching the point where a layoff no longer decides what happens next.

Being laid off in your late 30s creates a strange kind of financial confusion when you already have…

[50,47

post-2041","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-fire","category-retirement","article","has-background","has-excerpt","has-avatar","has-author","has-date","has-comment-count","has-category-meta","has-read-more","has-post-media","thumbnail-

<meta name="description" content="Laid off in your late 30s with a seven-figure portfolio?
