SpaceX was and still is privately held. The company isn\u2019t accessible to most investors. Rocket Lab, on the other hand, provided a way to gain exposure to the burgeoning commercial space economy. Anyone who believed the long-term thesis of reusable rockets, satellite economy, government defense contracts, space commercialization, etc. many times found themselves buying Rocket Lab because they simply ran out of other viable options to invest in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now I\u2019m starting to hear people ask the flip side:.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What if SpaceX goes public?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Will people <strong>sell Rocket Lab (RKLB) to buy SpaceX<\/strong>? Could Rocket Lab\u2019s stock price plummet as investors flee? Or could both companies exist side by side with plenty of growth available for both?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you own Rocket Lab stock, this could be one of the most important questions for your long-term portfolio. You\u2019ll want to know the answer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The answer is more nuanced than many investors realize.<\/p>\n\n\n<div style=\"max-width: -moz-fit-content\" became attractive because it was \u201cthe closest thing to SpaceX\u201d that traded on public markets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On paper, the parallels are fairly straightforward:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Both companies build rockets<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Both launch satellites<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Both vertically integrated<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Both want to own space infrastructure<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Both expanding into defense \/ gov contracts<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Both pursuing long-term platforms as opposed to one-time businesses.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Buying Rocket Lab was essentially betting on the growth of the space economy for many retail investors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A smaller subset of investors thought Rocket Lab could one day be a miniature version of SpaceX that still made a ton of money though.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This thesis obviously persists today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What investors are missing though is that Rocket Lab was never going to be JUST a \u201cSpaceX substitute.\u201d The company has long been developing into its own independent business with its own proprietary strengths, customers, and execution strategy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"1-the-space-economy-is-much-bigger-than-one-company\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Space Economy Is Much Bigger Than One Company<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another misconception investors have is \u201cspace is a winner takes all industry\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It probably won\u2019t be.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There\u2019s simply too much money to be made in space for it to be a winner takes all market. The entire TAM for space is huge and still growing. We\u2019re talking about;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Satellite deployment<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Defense<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Earth Observation<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Space comms<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Space data infrastructure<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>National security payloads<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Deep space<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Hypersonic<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Space manufacturing<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You get the idea. Space-related industries could become a several trillion dollar economy in the coming decades.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Governments around the world are already ramping up budgets to build out sovereign space capabilities. Space is now largely considered a warfighting domain to be dominated by the countries that best develop a strategic advantage above Earth, not just a scientific one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Multiple companies can win massive contracts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In fact many governments and enterprise customers will want multiple providers and won\u2019t want to be reliant on SpaceX. It\u2019s called \u201cnot putting all your eggs in one basket\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Think about it. If something happens to SpaceX\u2019s satellite launch program, every paying customer will have no choice but to wait\u2026potentially for years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Diversification is key in aerospace and defense. That\u2019s one reason why Rocket Lab continues to win contracts even with SpaceX having a massive scale advantage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"2-rocket-lab-has-quietly-become-more-than-a-rocket-company\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Rocket Lab Has Quietly Become More Than a Rocket Company<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lots of retail investors still view Rocket Lab as \u201cjust\u201d a small launcher that competes with SpaceX\u2019s rockets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This notion couldn\u2019t be further from the truth these days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rocket Lab is quickly becoming a space systems company.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Its business now consists of:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Components for satellites<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Satellites<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Solar arrays<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Guidance<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Mission software<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Defense<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Integrated satellite platforms<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Government space infrastructure<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Why does this matter?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Well\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Launch services themselves will likely become a low margin commodity business in the future. Especially once SpaceX goes public.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As such, Rocket Lab\u2019s management has been smart to expand into higher-margin portions of the space stack. Instead of solely relying on launches for top-line growth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This could be especially important once we see an IPO from SpaceX.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After all, why would investors pay anything near fair value for Rocket Lab if we assume everyone is immediately comparing them to SpaceX.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At first glance, SpaceX \u201cwins\u201d hands down when focusing solely on launch. However, if investors begin to see Rocket Lab as a diversified space infrastructure company vs. just \u201csmaller\u201d rocket guy, then we could see a re-rating of sorts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"3-the-real-risk-capital-rotation\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Real Risk: Capital Rotation<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The largest short term threat to Rocket Lab in the event of a SpaceX IPO is probably not operational related.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Psychological and financial.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Investors who own Rocket Lab today may be the first to sell and rotate into SpaceX as soon as they can access it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Temporary selling pressure could ensue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Think of the headlines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou should ask why own Rocket Lab if you can own SpaceX?\u201d<br>\u201cRetail investors dump Rocket Lab for Elon Musk\u2019 stead\u201d<br>\u201cThe SpaceX IPO is reshaping the public space industry\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Just the narrative alone could cause volatility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Large institutional investors may have to rebalance. Some ETF\u2019s that track aerospace or innovation could even cut Rocket Lab to add SpaceX simply because it would instantly be one of the largest companies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That is a very real possibility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However this is where investors need to differentiate between short-term sentiment driven moves vs long term business fundamentals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They are not always correlated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"4-rocket-lab-and-spacex-are-not-identical-businesses\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Rocket Lab and SpaceX Are Not Identical Businesses<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Something else to consider that gets glazed over by some investors is that SpaceX and Rocket Lab are aiming for different scale operations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">SpaceX is doubling down on:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Ultra High Payload Volume<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Starship<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Mars<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Starlink Broadband<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ultra Heavy Pricing<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rocket Lab has doubled down on:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Small\/Medium Payload Launches<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Responsive Launch Solutions<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Mission Dedicated<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Flexibility for Governments\/DOD<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Modular Satellite Constellations<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Every satellite doesn\u2019t need to launch on Falcon Heavy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Customers also care about:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Quick Turnarounds<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Mission Dedicated Launches<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Simplicity<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Flexibility<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Customer Focus<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rocket Lab may very well continue to fill a need long after SpaceX has steamrolled the heavy lift market.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Just like we see with airplane manufactures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Boeing didn\u2019t kill Embraer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">AWS didn\u2019t kill small cloud hosting providers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nvidia doesn\u2019t kill AMD.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There\u2019s usually room for both.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"5-peter-beck-vs-elon-musk\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Peter Beck vs Elon Musk<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One culture factor that people overlook\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Leadership Style.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Peter Beck doesn\u2019t run his company the same way Elon Musk does.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Elon Musk = skyrocketing public expectations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Launching SpaceX\u2019 first unicorn. The company\u2019s eventual IPO will be one of the largest ever.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Peter Beck = disciplined, engineering-led execution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Has attracted investors that value:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Operational Focus<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Realistic Communication<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Manufacturing Discipline<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Long-term Infrastructure Thinking<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Bare Knuckle Fighting if needed, but less hyped up storytelling.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rocket Lab might actually attract more investors that prefer lower volatility and admire their focus on simply executing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"6-valuation-expectations-matter\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Valuation Expectations Matter<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here\u2019s something else investors should be careful about: valuation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Say SpaceX ends up IPOing at a massively high valuation. Valuations that lofty set investor expectations that are hard to exceed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">SpaceX could IPO at hundreds of billions of dollars of market cap. Then investors may eventually come to realize that \u201cmassive future growth\u201d is already priced into the stock.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rocket Lab, on the other hand, could stay a smaller company with more \u201croom to grow.\u201d Not to mention, smaller up and coming companies have historically outperformed larger category leaders percentage wise simply due to the fact that growth rates can be maintained a lot easier from a smaller base.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That\u2019s not to say Rocket Lab will definitely outperform.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But what I will say is that <strong>investors should never think \u201cbigger company will automatically deliver better returns.\u201d They\u2019re not synonymous.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"7-could-rocket-lab-actually-benefit-from-a-spacex-ipo\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Could Rocket Lab Actually Benefit From a SpaceX IPO?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But there\u2019s a twist.
