But in 2025, that shifted. Google\u2019s AI moat is now becoming clear:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>They have the largest data repositories<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>They build their own AI chips (TPUs)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>They run one of the largest hyperscale clouds in the world<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>They control the access point to the internet with Search<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Google is essentially building a vertically integrated AI stack which gives them opportunity to capture value at every layer of that stack: chips, foundation models, cloud compute, applications, and distribution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Markets are re-rating the stock to reflect the new competitive position.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Cloud_continues_to_accelerate\"><\/span>Cloud continues to accelerate<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Google Cloud is a key profit driver, as the hyperscale cloud infrastructure sales boom with enterprise AI workloads, generative AI use cases, and other new datacenter services. Growth is stabilizing, margins are improving, and the division is far more valuable today than it was just 2 years ago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Ads_are_resilient\"><\/span>Ads are resilient<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It has been a meme over the last couple of years about how TikTok and privacy+ regulations would break Meta\u2019s ad business and replace it as the de facto digital advertising platform. But so far Google\u2019s search and YouTube ads business has remained resilient, and continues to produce stable, compounding revenues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Valuation_is_reasonable\"><\/span>Valuation is reasonable<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Relative to peers, Google\u2019s forward valuation is not extremely high. Even compared to its direct mega-cap AI competitors, Google trades on the low end of the earnings multiple spectrum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Three_Strikes_and_Metas_Downfall_and_an_Upside_Opportunity\"><\/span>Three Strikes and Meta\u2019s Downfall (and an Upside Opportunity)<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Google\u2019s stock is up ~75% this year. Meta\u2019s down 25%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The natural response to the big Google run is to consider whether it\u2019s time to take profits. But on the flip side, some see Meta as having the same opportunity today that Google had last year:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Both are leaders in AI.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Meta is aggressively investing.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ads are strong and will only get stronger in the coming years.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>And Meta trades at a more reasonable forward multiple.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Both extremes are lazy logic. A binary view is rarely correct. Instead, let\u2019s be rational and data-driven and look at the real picture today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Wall_Street_got_spooked_by_Metas_AI_spending\"><\/span>Wall Street got spooked by Meta\u2019s AI spending<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Meta\u2019s earnings miss was one thing. But announcing capital expenditures much higher than expected spooked investors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Meta is spending big on:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>GPU clusters<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>AI data centers<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Training next-generation recommendation models<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Infrastructure to support generative AI use cases<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The near-term impact of this investment is lower margins and a big jump in expenses \u2014 two things Wall Street loathes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But the long-term impact of this investment is an AI turbocharge for:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Instagram Reels engagement<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Better ad targeting<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>WhatsApp monetization<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>AI-powered content discovery<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Future AI assistants and platform use cases<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Meta is making a big bet, but the bet will take time to mature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Stock_was_priced_for_perfection\"><\/span>Stock was priced for perfection<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Meta had tripled from its 2022 lows. Expectations were running high. One little miss was enough to set off a panic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_core_ad_business_is_not_broken\"><\/span>The core ad business is not broken<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Engagement metrics are solid. Ad products are stronger than ever thanks to AI-driven optimization. Businesses are continuing to shift ad budgets from traditional channels into Meta platforms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fundamentally, the core business is not broken.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Meta_valuation_looks_attractive_post-drop\"><\/span>Meta valuation looks attractive post-drop<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Post-earnings drop, Meta\u2019s forward valuation appears more reasonable. If the AI investments start to compound, there is significant upside.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Sell_Google_and_Buy_Meta_Buy_Meta_and_Hold_Google_Both\"><\/span>Sell Google and Buy Meta? Buy Meta and Hold Google? Both?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Truthfully, there is rarely a perfect black and white answer to these questions. But here is one way to rationally think through it:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Reasons_to_consider_trimming_Google\"><\/span>Reasons to consider trimming Google<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Trimming Google may make sense. Even if you have owned it for years, a strong run gives a good opportunity to lock in some gains. Especially if Google has grown to be a disproportionately large position in your portfolio.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Reasons_to_consider_buying_Meta\"><\/span>Reasons to consider buying Meta<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Buying Meta also makes sense. It\u2019s one of the leaders in AI, and the share price pullback gives access to Meta on favorable long-term terms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Neither Google nor Meta are perfect. The goal is to find a risk-reward you are comfortable with, given where the stocks are today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_Danger_of_Selling_the_Winner_and_Buying_the_Laggard\"><\/span>The Danger of Selling the Winner and Buying the Laggard<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s not a binary decision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sell all Google to fully rotate into Meta? Risky.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Buy more Meta with 100% of profits from Google? Risky.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Why?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because Google and Meta are different:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Google = Cloud + Search + AI monetization<br>Meta = Social + Ads + AI-optimization + future platforms<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One is an AI stack play.<br>The other is an AI monetization play.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By selling all Google you lose exposure to one of the most durable business models ever created.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By selling all Meta you ignore potential high beta upside in one of the world\u2019s largest digital platforms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Going \u201call-in\u201d on one or the other increases portfolio volatility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"A_Middle_Ground_Strategy_That_Works\"><\/span>A Middle Ground Strategy That Works<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sell all one and buy all the other? No.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Trim some, add some, and hold both for the long term? Yes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For instance:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Trim some Google if it is overweight in your portfolio<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Add to Meta to capture a part of the pullback<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Keep positions in both core AI tech leaders<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Why?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It gets you:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Google\u2019s relative stability and cloud+search strength<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Meta\u2019s growth potential and rebound opportunity<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Lower portfolio volatility<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Exposure to multiple paths to AI monetization<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_Would_I_Write_in_My_Portfolio_Journal\"><\/span>What Would I Write in My Portfolio Journal?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If I was writing this post for myself in my portfolio journal, I would frame this move as follows:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Google: \u201cCore long-term compounder \u2014 trim after strong run.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Meta: \u201cHigh-upside AI rebalance \u2014 buy on weakness.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I wouldn\u2019t make big portfolio moves. I would partially rebalance, capture opportunities, and then just hold for the long term.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_Key_Factor_Your_Time_Horizon\"><\/span>The Key Factor? Your Time Horizon<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The right answer depends heavily on your timeframe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Short term traders<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Meta will be more volatile.
